For those seeking a truly unique adventure, the Barrydale Waterfall Hiking Trail offers a rewarding experience for nature lovers and hikers alike. This out-and-back trail takes you on a scenic journey through the valley behind the town, offering stunning views, indigenous flora, and the ultimate reward at the end: a breathtaking waterfall and pool.

The trail is relatively easy at first, with a gentle climb through the valley. As you get closer to the waterfall, however, the terrain becomes more challenging, culminating in a steep descent towards the stunning pool at the base of the waterfall. It’s important to bring plenty of water, as the only resupply point is halfway up the trail.

Starting the Hike:
Directions to the Trailhead: To begin your adventure, head to the parking area for the Barrydale Hiking Trail, located at the extension of Claassen Street. From the R62, drive down Tinley Road, passing the Barrydale Public Clinic and continuing up the hill.  Tinley Road will turn into Wilger Ave.  Take a left turn onto Jakaranda ave, then right onto Eike Ave.  As Eike Ave curves to the right, turn left onto Protea Ave and take the second left onto Claassen Street. Follow the street past the last houses, and you’ll find a sign indicating the trailhead for the Barrydale Hiking Trail, about 3 km from the main road.
The Hike: What to Expect

• Start: Cross the stile to begin your hike, and follow the single-track trail on the other side. The path hugs a fence on your left-hand side for the first few hundred meters, before crossing another stile after 400m. The trail then ascends gently through a broad valley, offering views of the surrounding landscape and plenty of opportunities to spot indigenous Proteas, Restios and Erica species. 
• Trail Features: As you ascend, take time to enjoy the panoramic views of Barrydale below. The path is clearly defined with rock cairns marking your way, but don’t forget to turn around and appreciate the landscape from different angles. The trail gradually climbs for the first 4 km, before reaching a split in the path.

Reaching the Waterfall
​After 4 km, you’ll encounter a split in the trail. A wooden sign will direct you left towards the waterfall, with Grootvadersbosch straight ahead (you can find a description of that trail on another leaflet). Follow the path towards the stream bed that has been visible on your left throughout the hike.

• The Final Descent: The trail brings you to a cliff after 800 meters. Traverse along the cliff to your right, where the path begins to descend. About halfway down, look for a faint trail branching to the left that leads around a rocky step. This scramble will take you to a beautiful pool at the base of the waterfall, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters.
• Return: Once you’ve experienced the beauty of the waterfall, simply reverse your route back to the starting point.
